Annual Health Care Expenses

Your Estimates

Fly Control $ 75   $
Deworming $ 100   $
Vaccinations $ 200   $
Physicals $ 200   $
Dental Care $ 100   $
Vet trip Charges $ 160   $

Total annual cost $ 835 Your total annual cost   $
Total annual cost ÷ 12 = monthly health care cost.  Example:   $835÷ 12 = $69.58
Your annual    $   ÷   12    =   Your monthly  $

Hoof Care Expenses

These figures are per farrier visit. Typically a horse receives a Trim and Shoes (T&S) three times year, or during the peak riding season (spring, summer, and fall). The rest of the year (winter) they go without shoes and need a trim. It all depends on where you live and what you do with your horse.

Farrier Visit Expenses

Your Estimates

Trim and Shoes (T&S) $ 85   $
Trim only (T) $ 35   $

Trim and Shoes (T&S) x number of visits per year = T&S annual hoof cost.
Example:  $85 x 3 = $255

Your T&S cost:   $   x     =  Your T&S annual  $
Trim only (T) x number of visits per year = T annual hoof cost. Example:     $35 x 3 = $105
Your T cost:        $   x     =   Your T annual  $

Annual T&S hoof cost + Annual T hoof cost = Annual hoof care expense.
Example: $225 + $105 = $360
Annual T&S: $ Annual T: $ = Your annual  $
Annual hoof care expense ÷ 12 months = Monthly hoof care expense. Example: $360 ÷ 12 = $30
Your annual   $   ÷   12   =   Your monthly   $

Feed Expenses:

A horse in light work (e.g., trail riding, light showing, etc.) needs to consume 2-3% of its body weight each day in forage. For example, a 1200 pound horse would need to consume 24-36 pounds of forage each day. The examples below were calculated based on feeding 30 pounds of forage each day.

Pounds fed per day (forage)

Your Estimate

Example 30 lbs.   lbs
Pounds fed each day x 30 days = pounds fed per month.
Example
: 30 lbs x 30 days = 900 pounds per month.
Your pounds/day      x   30 days   =   Your pounds/month
Pounds per month ÷ 60 average pounds per bale = bales per month.
Example
: 900 lbs ÷ 60 lbs = 15 bales per month.
Your pounds/month       ÷    60 lbs    =    Your bales/month

Forage (Hay) Costs

Your Estimates

Hay bale $ 10   $
Bales fed per month x $ cost per bale = monthly cost.
Example
: 15 bales x $10 = $150 monthly cost.
Your bales/month   x Cost $ = Your monthly $
Monthly cost x 12 months = annual cost Example: $150 x 12 months = $1800 annual cost.
Your monthly cost $ x 12 months =  Your annual forage: $

Grain

Grain is considered a feed supplement. On average, a horse in light work will consume 2-5 pounds of grain per day. The examples below were calculated based on feeding 3 pounds of grain each day.

Pounds fed per day (grain)

Your Estimate

Example 3 lbs.   lbs.
Pounds fed each day x 30 days = pounds fed per month.
Example
: 3 lbs x 30 days = 90 pounds per month.
Your pounds/day       x    30 days    =    Your pounds/month
Pounds per month ÷ 50 average pounds per bag = bags per month.
Example
: 90 lbs ÷ 50 lbs = 1.8 bags per month.
Your pounds/month      ÷    50 lbs    =    Your bag(s)/month

Grain Costs

Your Estimates

Grain bag $9   $
Bag(s) fed per month x $ cost per bag = monthly cost.
Example
: 1.8 bags x $9 = $16.20 monthly cost.
Your bag(s)/month x Your cost $ = Your monthly $
Monthly cost x 12 months = annual cost. Example: $16.20 x 12 months = $194.40 annual cost.
Your monthly cost $ x 12 months = Your annual grain: $

Forage cost + grain cost = annual expense (use figures from calculations above).
Example
: $1800 + $194.40 = $1994.40
Annual forage: $ + Annual grain: $ = Annual feed: $

Tack and Equipment

Your Estimates

Saddle (used) $ 600   $
Bridle $ 100   $
Saddle Pad $ 100   $
Halter $ 20   $
Lead Rope $ 8   $
Curry Comb $ 4   $
Hoof Pick $ 2   $
Brush $ 8   $
Buckets $ 35   $
Blanket $ 100   $
Riding Clothes $ 100   $

Total $ 1077 Your total     $

Total Annual Expenses

Annual Health Care + Annual Hoof Care + Annual Feed + Tack/Equipment = Total Annual Cost
Example: $835 + $360 + $1994.40 + $1077= $4266.40*
Your costs: + + + = *
* NOTE: This would be considered your Total First Annual Cost because tack and equipment are typically one time costs, but over time these items will need to be replaced.
