Module Summaries
Module 1 - Horse Care (Diet, Water, Shelter)
The minimum ingredients for horse care are food, water, and shelter. The majority of horse's food consists of forage (pasture or hay). Additional supplements can be added, such as grain, vitamins, and minerals. A horse's food must be proportionate to maintain health and balance between amount and workload/exercise. Water must be accessible to the horse at all times, even in the winter. Heating elements for winter time help encourage the horse to drink by slightly warming the water. Shelter must also be provided to protect the horse from the elements.
Module 2 - Horse Lifestyle
Horse lifestyle is based upon the horse's activities and where the horse will live. Boarding facilities offer a variety of options for both horse and owner. Keeping your horse at home is an option to those which have the space.
Module 3 - Horse Health
Horse health is managed by the owner through their veterinarian and farrier. The vet performs regular health checks for dental care and vaccinations. Vaccinations are typically given twice a year in the spring and fall. The vet also cares for the horse during illness and injury. The farrier trims and shoes your horse's hooves. Six to eight weeks is the average cycle time between trimming/shoeing.
Module 4 - Horse Tack/Equipment (halter, saddle, blankets, brushes, etc.)
The minimum necessary tack and equipment for horse owners are: halter, lead rope, saddle, saddle pad/blanket, bridle, grooming items, horse blanket, and riding apparel.
